Helga Henschen was one of the best known and most versatile
artists in Sweden. Born in Stockholm 1917, she attended the
Royal Academy of Art 1940-45 and had over ninety one woman and
group exhibitions between then and 2002.
She painted, sculpted, made illustrations, posters and cartoons,
and wrote eleven books of prose and poetry. The cartoons
appeared regularly in Dagens Nyheter, the largest Swedish
newspaper, and in other papers and magazines. Her work can be
found in the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm, in the
Sundbyberg Town Hall, in several other museums, and in hundreds
of public and private collections.
Among her public works are the Tensta underground station,
completed 1975, and Dafne, a large sculpture and fountain in
Sodertalje Town Center, completed 1978.
Helga received many awards, grants and recognitions in her
lifetime, and was often interviewed on national TV and radio and
in the press. She was active in the Cultural Association of the
Social Democrat Party, and fought for political prisoners, as
well as the rights of children and animals. She worked for the
peace movement and for social and religious organizations.
1943 - 47 she was married to the German-Swedish author Peter
Weiss, with whom she has a daughter, and 1961-65 to the
Finnish-Swedish poet Ralf Parland.
